Blue Windbreaker

Artist Statement

Whenever I go to a roller skating rink with my dad he tells me the same story.

"Your Grandma would always make me ask this girl to skate," he would say. "She would wear this stupid blue windbreaker. I hated skating with her because she would never let me skate backwards, only forward and her hands were damp and sticky."

Even though it may not be one of his favorite memories, his story is one of mine. My photographs explore intimate moments in unfamiliar situations. The skaters focus on one another, as they attempt to stay upright and moving together, balanced on four wheels. They are surrounded by other skaters but the moment takes place between just them and it is filled with vulnerability. These interactions happen in an environment I find so familiar that others may simply see as a place for roller skating.
